Ex-boy band member launches solo career by degrees

Behind the limelight surrounding 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys in the last five years, lesser boy bands such as 98 Degrees existed. Though 98 Degrees actually did go multiplatinum, they never generated the hype of the big boy bands.

So it's only fitting that 98 Degrees member Jeff Timmons is embarking on his solo career with a lot less fanfare than Justin Timberlake or Nick Carter. Timmons is self-releasing "Whisper That Way" and heading out on a nationwide Winnebago tour to sell it. He pulls up to Borders Books & Music's Cleveland Heights store, 3466 Mayfield Road, at 8 tonight for a miniconcert and CD signing. The CD is also available online at www.jefftimmons.com.

And while releasing your own album and doing a DIY tour may be a step down for Timmons, it sure beats bandmate Nick Lachey's attention-getting ploy: allowing his marriage to dim-bulb singer Jessica Simpson, a woman who makes Anna Nicole seem smart, be filmed for the MTV reality show "Newlyweds."

(Timmons will also perform as a guest vocalist for Jim Brickman's show at Akron's E.J. Thomas Hall Performing Arts at 8 p.m. tomorrow.)
