The Honeymoon Is Over
Marriage Fails to Enhance the Music of Lachey, Simpson

review from the Washington Post

Before they married each other, there was nothing incredibly interesting about Jessica Simpson or Nick Lachey: She was the blond, aggressively virginal pop star who wouldn't do the things Britney Spears did, like show her bellybutton or make entertaining records. He was the frontman of 98 Degrees, the blandly agreeable boy band that appealed primarily to anyone alarmed by the encroaching funkiness of 'N Sync. Lachey and Simpson married in the fall of 2002, a union that has since produced two albums and an MTV reality show, "The Newlyweds."

A document of their not-entirely-blissful first year of marriage, "The Newlyweds" is sort of like "The Osbournes" without the cursing, tattoos or incontinent dogs. In its remorseless depiction of the couple's Olympic-caliber bickering (she's spoiled and slovenly; he's an eye-rolling neat freak), "The Newlyweds" is more revealing than either album, and a lot more enjoyable.

Had either artist channeled these real-life difficulties into music, the result might have been a searing portrait of a complicated marriage, a "Tunnel of Love" for tan, good-looking people. But no. Both "Soulo" (his) and "In This Skin" (hers) are filled with the sort of personality-free, now-that-I've-finally-found-you-type love songs from which most reasonable people flee. What's worse, neither Simpson nor Lachey, unlike their ostensible counterparts Britney and Justin, has strayed far from the teen pop conventions that have threatened to sink the genre since the late '90s: generic hooks, gooey ballads, perfunctory R&B-lite.

Simpson, a onetime gospel singer, seems to be staking a claim somewhere in between Celine Dion and Faith Hill, working her way through a series of big, MOR ballads and gently hip-hop-inflected pop tracks, most of which feature lyrics attesting to her newfound womanliness. That the disc's best song (the peppy first single, "Sweetest Sin") was written by Diane Warren should tell you something. Even Simpson's reliably strong vocals fail her here: No one with such a fine voice (and access to modern studio technology) should ever sound this grating.

Lachey, on indefinite hiatus from 98 Degrees, fares a little better on his first solo album, "Soulo." With its horns and pianos and beats, "Soulo" sounds like an only slightly more current version of a 98 Degrees album, the majority of the bells and whistles coming courtesy of a lineup of first-string producers that includes Trina Harmon and the Matrix. Between its work on the latest Liz Phair album and on "Shut Up," the album's utterly charmless first track, the Matrix has a lot to answer for, although things look up considerably from there.

Lachey manages to inject enough personality into the album's standard-issue R&B/dance tracks and wan ballads to keep things interesting, though it's only on the inevitable future wedding song "Edge of Eternity" that he manages to move beyond the usual teen pop pleasantries. Otherwise, he seems to have learned nothing about navigating the complicated minefield of boy band solo albums from Justin Timberlake, who knew a thing or two about exploding boundaries without alienating his base, and whose own solo debut remains an exemplar of the form.

Another Newlyweds article

The MTV show that follows pop stars Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey (search) of 98 Degrees around for their first year of marriage - is turning into the kind of TV hit that could give album sales a real boost (hers just hit the Top 10 and his came out yesterday).

But is the price too high? Simpson is in danger of becoming a much sexier, teen-idol version of the clueless Ozzy Osbourne.

The ratings are big. Billboard's senior writer Carla Hay thought the show would be lucky to get 1 million viewers. In fact, it debuted with 2.48 million viewers and won its timeslot.

Those numbers have held up. "Newlyweds" (Tuesday nights at 10:30 on MTV) had more young viewers than "Making the Band," "The Osbournes" (search) and everything else on basic cable except wrestling, MTV specials like the Video Music Awards (search) and stalwart "The Real World." But what has everyone talking is Jessica Simpson herself. She's been described by reviewers as a brat, embarrassingly babyish and - when people want to be kind - charmingly clueless.

"She is dumb as a stick," said Alisha, a 31-year-old graphic designer too embarrassed about being a fan of the show to give her last name.

"Jessica is totally watchable, like Ozzy Osbourne. She's not a train wreck like Anna Nicole. You can tell Nick is annoyed by her, but she's totally sexy so he puts up with it. I felt amused watching Ozzy. I felt dirty watching Anna Nicole. And I feel pity watching Jessica. She's the show. I'm not sure she knows she's the show, but she is."

It's hard not to be fascinated by a pop princess who would rather buy new clothes than do laundry, wonders if her tuna fish is really tuna because it's called Chicken of the Sea ("a blonde moment" Simpson has said about that comment), goes camping with her Louis Vuitton bag and belches more than John Belushi in "Animal House."

Paula, another fan, can't decide what her favorite stupid-Jessica moment is. "It's kind of like repulsive yet intriguing," said Paula. "Every single word out of her mouth, you think, 'Who could be stupider?' "

News reports already say the show has been optioned for a second season, something the stars were both up for. "Well, it was really more fun than we anticipated," said Lachey in an interview right before the show debuted. "So if the situation was right, we might do it again." MTV says no decision has been made.

"It would be perfect as long as season two is 'Marriage, Marriage' and season three is 'Le Divorce,' " said Paula. "Though God help us if they ever have a kid."

But will the marriage last that long? "In five years, they'll break up," Alisha predicted. "He'll cheat on her and she'll be jealous and they'll break up and get back together a thousand times before finally ending it. There's nothing wrong with them; they're just too young."

Re-release of "This Christmas"

The new UMe series, with all 23 albums released September 23, 2003, is a spin-off of 20TH CENTURY MASTERS/THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION, which features "best of" albums from the most significant music artists of the past century and, with shipments of more than 22 million albums since its inception in 1999, is the most successful single artist series in history. "The Best of 98 Degrees" (Universal/UMe), whose first albums were released on Motown, now reissues "This Christmas", its first Universal album. First issued in 1999, the album was a Top 30 hit which was certified platinum and included the Top 40 pop version of "This Gift" as well as more traditional fare.

Jessica hit #10 with her release "Sweetest Skin"

Aside from the hip-hop titles that invade The Billboard 200's top 10, pop belter Jessica Simpson makes the scene, too. Her 64,000-copy opener puts her at No. 10, a bigger number than her first-day sales had suggested.

Figure that TV juice from "Total Request Live," her own MTV series with husband Nick Lachey and a stop on "The Late, Late Show With Craig Kilborn" helped pad her total as the sales week progressed. This is not a milestone week for Simpson, as her second album started at No. 6 with 120,000 copies sold in its 2001 opener.

Now in its 3rd week of release, the album falls from #35 to #45 on the Billboard 200 top albums. That's a fast drop.

episode 1 of Newlyweds
MTV Tuesdays at 10:30pm

I caught most of episode 1 of the new MTV reality series featuring the lives of Nick and Jessica. It is receiving heavy rerun play on the channel currently. The first episode features a lot of their time in their mansion...and trying to keep it tidy. At one point is a close up of a huge pile of clothes that sits in the foyer. There's a long running disagreement on how Jessica wants to get maid service, and Nick thinks it's ridiculous.

Nick is seen moving stuff from his condo after he was able to rent it out, and has his brother Drew come help him out. One wonders why they did not get professional moving help cause it's a s***load of stuff. In the end, they do attempt to hire a maid. Nick does the interviews.

episode 2 preview shows Jessica in charge of choosing the dancers for Nick's video.

Nick/Jessica and the balloon ride

Nick's plan to surprise his wife Jessica with a ride in a hot air balloon turned out to be a disaster - because the pop beauty is scared of heights. Nick didn't get the reaction he was hoping for when he gave his 23-year-old wife of 10 months the ride above San Diego, California. He was clearly unaware of his wife's fears, says, "When she got up there, she was just trembling and shaking."

Jessica continues, "It was a little scary because I'm afraid of heights. I thought the basket was going to fall out from underneath me." Still, she adds, "It was very romantic."

Jessica's unattractive side

Pop beauty Jessica Simpson has an unattractive side effect from hysterical laughter - she wets herself. Her tendency to add a splash of urine to the moment when she's amused will be documented in her upcoming reality show with husband Nick.

Lachey says, "We were having a party, and Jessica spilled something on the floor. She and her mom started laughing hysterically.

"Now, when Jessica laughs a little too hard, she has a tendency to lose control of her bladder. This was no exception. She p***ed herself silly, and the camera was there to capture it."

Jessica launches her CD with Nick

Jessica Simpson took the stage at a launch party for her new CD with perhaps her biggest fan. The 23-year-old singer crooned about love and loss with fellow singer and husband, Nick Lachey. Nick also performed a few songs from his new solo album Soulo, which will be released Sept. 9.

About 500 family, friends and radio contest winners attended the party at The Palms hotel-casino. Simpson sang a handful of songs from her new album, In This Skin, set for release Aug. 19.

‘‘It’s all about telling that person you’re madly in love with . . . them before they walk out that door,’’ said Simpson in introducing the song I Have Loved You.

Nick sang a ballad titled This I Swear, which he said describes the ultimate kind of love he and Simpson share. ‘‘She’s never looked better. She’s never sounded better,’’ Nick said of his wife. ‘‘It’s definitely her time.

Jessica and Nick at Miss Teen USA pageant

The paegant was held on August 12 and shown on NBC. Jessica performed her new single "Sweetest Sin". Nick was one of the judges, and was joined by Kyle Brandt of NBC's Days of Our Lives, 2002 Olympic Speed Skating Gold Medalist Derek Parra, and Brittany Snow of NBC's American Dreams, among others.

American Idol star Justin Guarini performed "Sorry" from his self-titled debut album. Brooke Burns of Dog Eat Dog and Mario Lopez of The Other Half hosted the show.

Nick and Jess in detail

The first year of marriage is typically fraught with moments of discovery. She learns, perhaps when a check bounces, that he has never written in a checkbook register. He learns that she considers a quick chat with her best friend to be anything under an hour. It's that first year when they learn how to live together as a couple.

Of course, most folks do it privately. Some celebrities, however, have conducted so much of their lives in the public eye it seems natural for them to continue. Singers Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey have an unusually public love affair. Their courtship, breakup and reconciliation were well documented. Their wedding was part of an NBC special this past January about celebrity weddings.

So what's left? Well, the marriage, and for a day-to-day chronicle of their new life, tune into MTV's "Newlyweds," kicking off Tuesday, Aug. 19.

The singers, who wed last October, say they remain very much in love, and their easy affections with each other make this seem more genuine than some celeb pairings. The couple has cameras following them, but Lachey says they drew the line at the bedroom and the bathroom.

Aside from that, is anything taboo?

"I guess the only thing that would be private is anything negative we have to say about another celebrity," Simpson says. "Unless we have a couple of glasses of wine, and then we are in trouble. I have bit my tongue a couple of times."

Simpson acknowledges that she is "not going to have any enemies over it." As of press time, all MTV had was a six-minute clip showing the couple in their natural habitat. Some of this was video from the wedding, showing a beautiful bride in a Vera Wang gown and a smitten groom as they kiss.

Simpson wrote, "I Do: Achieving Your Dream Wedding," a book about planning her wedding, for which she has done considerable promotion. Now the couple is promoting their individual albums, both of which are scheduled to be released the same day the MTV show debuts. His, "SoulO," marks his first effort without pop group 98 Degrees; Hers, her third, is "In This Skin."

Given this vast amount of publicity, why would they want more?

"Nick and I just talked about it and immediately said yes," Simpson says from a Hollywood hotel room before a press conference. "The power of MTV is unbelievable. And, it is great for our careers because of the publicity that we will be getting. And, Nick and I are good people. There wasn't going to be anything we had to hide that would ruin our careers. Nick and I are a great example of true love. My whole career, I have tried to be a positive role model for young girls and for brides. People really expect celebrity marriages to fail. This is a great way to point out that we are completely in love, and you won't hear any rumors."

Simpson had declared her intention to remain a virgin until her wedding night, and so she became a bride who could wear white in the most traditional sense. "And it really meant something," she says of sex. "That's a great adjustment for us, and it's a different world, and it takes you to a different level of love. And we love each other passionately, and that gave us something to look forward to." She stops herself there, and giggles.

Naturally, they are yet to celebrate their first anniversary, and are still at the stage where each finds the other's household foibles cute.

Simpson admits she is sloppy and that her husband is neat. "The towel comes off my body and stays on the floor," she says. "I have always been taken care of my whole life. My mom always cleaned up after me and made our beds. She is a supermom. Then, I lived by myself, and I hired a housekeeper to come in three times a week, and do laundry and pick up after me."

She describes Lachey, "as taking on the woman role and I take on the sloppy male role. He has done laundry since third grade and even irons his undershirts." It wasn't until the couple went on "Oprah" that Simpson and Winfrey persuaded him to hire a maid for their home, Simpson says.

When Lachey gets on the phone, he downplays that he needed cajoling. "Jessica gives me a bad rap," he says. "I had no problem (with a maid). I just didn't want a complete stranger in my home."

Having been in the spotlight since 98 Degrees began playing to squealing teens in the summer of '97, Lachey says he is accustomed to fame. "We have been in the spotlight, but never to the degree it is now, with your life constantly being taped," he says. "It is not nearly as intrusive as I expected it would be. You kind of get used to them being there. I forget they are even there."

In the MTV clip, they are shown doing pretty much what many couples do -- lounging on the couch, watching the tube and eating. There is one exchange where she says, "Is this chicken or is this fish? I know it's tuna but it says Chicken of the Sea." Lachey looks at her as if her spaceship just landed. "Chicken of the Sea is a brand," he explains evenly.

In another scene, viewers learn Simpson can belch like a foghorn. On another day, she watches him watching young women audition for his video.

In yet another scene, this time on a boat, their sculpted bodies embrace, with the blue sea as a background, picturesque enough for a Polo ad. Simpson acknowledges she definitely wants children, and one can imagine how good-looking the offspring will be. That, however, will likely be another installment in the video library of their lives.

More on Jess and Nick

Don't envy Jessica Simpson because she's young and pretty and is a multiplatinum-selling recording star. Envy her because Nick Lachey, her fellow pop singer and husband since October, always remembers to leave the toilet seat down after using the bathroom.

"Nick is amazing around the house," Simpson gushes. "He has done his own laundry and ironed his shirts since he was in third grade. Whereas I'm totally spoiled — my mom used to make my bed, and I got used to staying in hotels where I could just leave my towels on the floor and know that a maid would bring fresh ones. So the usual male/female roles are reversed with us." (Related item: What other musicians have had TV shows?)

Fans will be able to see that reversal up close Tuesday night (10:30 ET/PT), when Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica premieres on MTV. The series arrives the same day as Simpson's new album, In This Skin, and three weeks before Lachey, a member of the boy band 98 Degrees, releases his self-titled solo debut. The show will intimately chronicle the couple's lives during their first year of marriage.

How intimately? According to Simpson, she and Lachey have been filmed by television crews and cameras installed in their home "pretty much every day, from when we wake up till we go to sleep." Only their bedroom and bathrooms are off limits, she says — "unless something funny happens there that we could use."

Newlyweds might have been dismissed as a recipe for domestic disaster had its formula not already yielded the most successful family-based series of the new millennium: MTV's own The Osbournes. Simpson says her show will be different: "There won't be as many bleeps — though it's hard never to say a cuss word. I've told Nick to tone it down."

Jeff Timmons new cd

While Justin Timberlake, Nick Carter and Nick Lachey looked to their respective record labels to support their solo careers, Jeff Timmons is breaking away from his boy band without corporate assistance.

The 98 Degrees singer just released his debut album, Whisper That Way, through his Web site, and the project will hit store shelves in September, but not through Universal Records.

"It's great being with a major label 'cause they can put a lot behind your project and do a lot of promotion and stuff, but they also have some sort of control over the creativity of your project at times," Timmons said at the recent Teen Choice Awards (see "Ashton Kutcher Punks The Competition At Teen Choice Awards"). "Even if you write everything and produce everything yourself, they can still get in there and change some stuff, and I just wanted to have my own thing where I tell my own story about what's been going on with me for the last couple of years."

Whisper That Way is a collection of 10 immensely personal songs, mostly about falling in love. One exception, the LP closer "Baby J," expresses the joy of becoming a father for the first time. "I always dreamed of this/ A baby boy to kiss/ And share my name," he sings on the tune.

"It's along the lines of old 98 Degrees, the first two albums, only it has a little more of an R&B feel to it and it's skewed a little older, a little more [adult contemporary]," Timmons said. "You'll get the familiar harmonies and stuff like that, the ballads, but there's a little bit more growth, hopefully."

The album's first single, which he was happy to select himself, is also called "Whisper That Way."

"It's just about a guy and a girl, two people in love," he explained. "It's not about what the person's saying, but how they're saying it to you. Literally the feel of what they are describing and the music. ... Basically the lyrics are like, 'Tell me about the first time we danced, tell me about the first time we met,' and I'm not really listening to what she's telling me about. It's how she's whispering it to me."

The end of 98 Degrees partX?

Nick has colored over his famous 98 Degrees tattoo, prompting fans to fear the boy band have split for good. The singer, who is now concentrating on a solo career, insists the popular four-piece are just taking a break, but his shoulder tattoo seems to suggest otherwise.

The sun design, which featured the number 98, was one all the members of the group had etched on them when their career took off. Nick says, "I'm proud of what we did but I felt it's time to colour it in and move forward. It was a special thing and we all did it as a bonding thing but it's time to move on. We're still very much together but people started having families and kids and wives and everyone wanted to take a break and pay attention to their personal lives."

Nick on Tom Green show

Tom Green refuses to get caught up in headlines about the current late-late night talk show derby -- though to read some reviews of his 2-week-old MTV "The New Tom Green Show," he's already breaking out in front of rivals Jimmy Kimmel and Craig Kilborn.

Nor does he sit around making lists of ideal guests he'd like to land for his latest offering -- which has already featured such moments as Brian McKnight singing "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain" with Tom, Linkin Park smashing a van with hammers, and 98 Degrees heartthrob Nick Lachey composing a song while, er, in the bathroom (lest anyone think Green's crassness was entirely gone). "We want people who want to have fun and do something silly," he says.

Quote from Jessica

How did Jessica Simpson land her new husband, 98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey? She tells Blink 102.7 "Party Diva" Gina de Franco that she's not adverse to stepping out in "a really minidress and a lace G-string. My favorite party fantasy is to sit way up on my husband's lap and tell him I am not wearing a bra." Wonder if that shows up in their new reality show....

Spliced

A chiller from Las Vegas screenwriter Ellen Cook, about an awkward teen horror movie fan (Liane Balaban) who watches the latest big-screen screamer -- and suddenly finds her every wish coming true. Tony-winner Ron Silver and 98 Degrees singer Drew Lachey co-star.

Synopsis (from All Movie Guide)
Young and troubled teen Mary (Liane Balaban) is obsessed with horror movies -- aren't we all! -- and refuses to stop watching them even though she has hideously bloody nightmares and sleepwalks into traffic. Her school psychiatrist (Ron Silver) is powerless to keep her from seeing a new hit movie called The Wisher, in which a pale-faced, razor-fingered, cloaked demon obeys wishes in the most terrible manner. What do you know, once Mary sees the movie, her wishes start coming true, which is bad news for her dad and her friends. Mary suspects someone, perhaps that cute boy who has a crush on her (Drew Lachey, singer for boy band 98 Degrees), is committing these awful crimes -- or could it be a supernatural being after all?

Newlyweds premiere
August 19th @ 10:30 PM EST on MTV
A reality show on the lives of Nick and Jessica

Following in the tradition of "The Osbournes," husband-and-wife pop singers Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson are letting MTV cameras record their first year of marriage.

Among the unscripted moments, Jessica burps and Nick insists he has to watch a college basketball game. Nick said, "A lot of people are going to be able to see we're just normal people, normal newlyweds living a new kind of life together,"

Nick, nows 29, and Jessica, 23, married in October.

Nick continued, "One of the first things that really attracted me to her years ago was she's such a free spirit and sometimes I tend to be overly analytical and somewhat anal."

Jessica noted those traits come in handy around the house. "Nick is a complete neat freak, he's the woman of the relationship, and I am a total disaster," she said. "He's very good at ironing clothes and doing laundry and cleaning toilets, stuff that he won't let me hire a housekeeper to do."

Jessica's songs include "I Wanna Love You Forever." She also wrote the book "I Do: Achieving Your Dream Wedding," which came out last month. 98 Degrees is taking a break from recording and touring, but he said 98 Degrees hasn't broken up.

Second thoughts?

Jessica fears her new MTV reality show The Newlyweds will turn her into a national laughing stock in America because fans will be able to see her for who she really is.

The pretty blonde and new husband Nick decided to put their marriage to the ultimate test and allow TV cameras to follow their every move to record segments for the show. But now she is having second thoughts about the series, which begins next month, because she's convinced she won't come across very well.

She says, "There's this one bit where my mom and I laughed too hard and I peed my pants. Then, you'll see that Nick and I are so not perfect. We argue about the most shallow things - and you'll see that. He's a neat freak and I'm the real sloppy one. I've always been looked after and he's always looked after himself. I spend way too much money and he doesn't spend any. It will be a nightmare."

Jessica and Nick in "Sweetest Sin" video

Jessica Simpson is joined by her husband, 98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey, in the music video for her new single "Sweetest Sin."

The track is the first from her upcoming album, In This Skin. Legendary songwriter Diane Warren wrote "Sweetest Sin," and the track will be available on July 15.

Nick said the video features the two scantily clad newlyweds rolling around on the beach, and one of them is topless. "It's a very sexy song," Nick said. "It's cool to do it with your wife--obviously I wouldn't want to see her doing a video like that with anybody else. So yeah, I worked pretty hard and tried to get as ripped up as I could. I was, you know, shirtless the entire shoot and the pictures I've seen--the footage I've seen--is really incredible. So I'm looking forward to that final video being done."

Nick said the couple set out from the start to make one of the hottest videos ever. He said, "Yeah, we wanted to create one of the Top 10 sexiest videos of all time. That was the goal.

Jessica's video will be on MTV's Making The Video on July 7 at 2 p.m. ET.

The couple is also preparing for the August 4 debut of their MTV reality show, the Newlyweds. Nick's debut solo album "Soul-O" and Jessica's "In This Skin", will both hit stores simultaneously on August 19. Nick and Jessica are also planning to tour together in support of their respective albums.

Nick and Jessica roast Carson Daly
MTV bash: 7pm Sunday 7/13/03 (MTV)

Diddy, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jimmy Kimmel, Nelly, Eminem, 50 Cent, Jon Stewart, Kid Rock, Master P, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey (in fact all of 98 Degrees will be there!).

Punk'd in video

Pop hunk Nick Lachey was so amused by his stint on MTV practical joke show Punk'd he's turned it into a video. The 98 Degrees star was punk'd by his new wife Jessica Simpson, who pretended the redneck family who had set up camp on the couple's lawn were distant relatives.

Lachey didn't see the funny side of the situation while it was being filmed for the hit show, but he had a hoot after the truth was revealed - the family were actors and Simpson had set him up. And now Lachey has invited the actors who pranked him to star in his new solo video Shut Up - as his long lost relatives.
