(London) the familiar piano intro ... and banish it from your mind. Westlife's live show is anything but predictable. They do play upbeats, they do dance and there isn't a stool in sight. The live vocals are outstanding, with Mark in particular proving he is far and away the best singer in the group. There are great moments: Swear It Again, the a cappella version of My Girl and the show-closing rendition of Flying Without Wings while suspended above the heads of the crowds, to name but a few. However, Westlife's concert suffers from its self-conscious attempt to emulate other pop shows. While endeavouring to recreate the spectacle of Backstreet Boys or 'N Sync, Westlife find themselves erring on the wrong side of bizarre: they start the show by being awoken from the dead, they do Uptown Girl dressed as Kwik Fit Fitters and they perform Seasons In The Sun on a moving treadmill while removing their jackets, detachable sleeve by detachable sleeve, stripper style! It seems Westlife are so concerned about proving the critics wrong with their dance routines, they've forgotten where their talent really lies. A perfect Westlife concert would be exactly what everyone expects, their best ballads sung live with a live band, minus the dancers - after all, no Westlife fan wants to see other girls flirting with her idols. Why try to be another BSB when they do it so well? Westlife are great live performers, it's just a shame their live show (if you'll pardon the pun) falls between too may stools.
