New Westlife look in Sligo

Shane jetted into Sligo this past Wednesday from London to bring the latest styles from the Autumn/Winter collection at Morgan. Shane has teamed up with his older sister, Mairead, and tomorrow is the fulfillment of a dream for the duo. A heavy Gardai presence is expected at the fashion house but as of yet no plans have been confirmed to close Castle Street. "We will see how it goes, but there are no plans as of yet to shut the street," said a Garda source.

At the Disney Channel Kids Awards last week, Westlife were up for nominations for Best male/group act and Act of the Year. Unfortunately, they did not win. Gareth Gates won for best male act and Blue won Act of the Year. Up to 2 million viewers were voting for the awards.

Shane on Bop Bop Baby...

Shane explains, "I was gutted when Bop Bop Baby only got to number five, because me and Bryan wrote it together. But it was a good kick up the backside, if you get complacent, there's always someone ready to come and take your place at the top."

Westlife attend Prince after party

Prince's One Night Alone Tour breezed into Dublin last Thursday to play a sell out concert in Dublin's Point Theatre. He had all cameras confiscated at the entrance to the point and banned all Press and Photographers from the gig. After his show at the point Prince and his entourage descended on Spirit niteclub to play another two hour set.

This hastily arranged after show party was attended by Louis Walsh, Paul Mc Guinness, Gavin Friday and Mark and Kian from Westlife. As in London where his after show party was held in Click - owned by Fran Cosgrave , boyfriend of Natasha Hamilton - Atomic Kitten, he instructed the staff at Spirit to cover all CCTV cameras in the club.

Westlife in the US (or lack thereof) - Westlife postpone CD

Westlife have decided to postpone their US CD release to who knows when, sadly and disappointingly enough. It was supposed to have been released on October 8.

And in terms of airplay, they are beginning to drop on the charts. This week, they fall from #43 to 47 with 865 airplays. They peaked two weeks ago with 930 airplays, and their highest rating was #41. I suspect that theyw ill fall off the charts this week. As an aside, did I mention that Ketchup song (Asereje) is starting to climb the charts on this side of the ocean pretty darn fast? For those who don't know already...the Ketchup song is #1 in just about the rest of the world.

Westlife in Los Angeles on October 13

Westlife will be performing at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on October 13. The auditorium is being transformed into "Club Shrine," featuring two discos built on platforms over two-thirds of the auditorium’s downstairs seats, five performance areas, go-go stages and balcony seating for an additional 3,500 people. This event will be broadcast on ABC during sweeps in November as "The Disco Ball… A 30-Year Celebration."

Legendary performers from the disco era are scheduled to perform, including The Village People, KC & The Sunshine Band, Gloria Gaynor, The Pointer Sisters, Irene Cara and Rick James. Also on the performers list are Whoopi Goldberg, Westlife, Aaron Carter and Carmen Electra.

Since the show is not an awards ceremony, the music will not be interrupted. Disco fans will be treated to the classics: "Disco Inferno," "I Will Survive," "YMCA," "It’s Raining Men," "Stayin’ Alive," "Macho Man," "Hot Stuff" and "Last Dance."

Tickets went on sale on 9/16 and cost $25 to $100. 100% of all ticket receipts will benefit AIDS Project Los Angeles.

An environmentally friendly Westlife

Westlife intend to offset 33,000 euro worth of CD sales to tree planting in Ireland in conjunction with the Future Forests initiative. Shane told the press, "Future Forests is a great idea and we have known about it for ages. Obviously we would have to have our forest planted in Ireland." The Future Forest concept aims to counteract the carbon emissions produced by mass CD production by planting trees.

It's #13 in Manchester, UK

Westlife are hoping to make it lucky 13 at the Manchester Evening News Arena next year. They have announced an extra date for their live tour, Unspeakable: The Greatest Hits Tour, on June 11 2003.

The group has already packed out the Arena 11 times and fans flocked to buy tickets when their 12th gig on June 10 was announced. Now concert number 13 is expected to be as big a hit. Tickets for the newly-added concert date are on sale at £25, at the Arena box office on (0161) 930 8000.

Westlife and Blue to sing with Donny Osmond

Westlife and Blue are among the stars lined up to join Donny Osmond in ITV's An Audience With program. The program will be shown on ITV1 on 11/23/02.

Westlife to appear on Sing for a Star

Cilla Black is to front a talent show that will pair pop wannabes with their music idols. The £10million series Sing for a Star will feature appearances from Ronan Keating, Westlife and Liberty X.

Contestants will be asked to imitate their favorite singer - but they are caught out when they are joined on stage by their hero. Cilla, who has already filmed a pilot for the new series, yesterday said: "The show will be great - it's got an element of surprise and of talent spotting."

Westlife win Best Band

A host of stars descended on Belfast for an evening of glamour at the Big Buzz WKD Irish Entertainment awards. Chart-topper Darius entertained more than a thousand fans who packed into the Waterfront Hall last night to recognise the best success stories in Ireland and beyond.

Former Boyzone member Keith Duffy hosted the star-studded event which also featured rockers The Hives. Westlife were the winners of the best band accolade.

It had been hoped that the event might feature the first reunion for Boyzone since they split three years ago. But fans were left disappointed by the failure of former frontman Ronan Keating to appear. This is the third year of the Big Buzz awards and organisers are promising an even bigger party next time around.

Even Westlife are not immune to parking tickets

Edinburgh's (Scotland) notorious parking Enforcers proved that no one is beyond their reach when they slapped Irish boy band Westlife with a ticket as they came to the Capital.

While the superstars were meeting and greeting fans a parking attendant stuck a ticket on the windscreen of their luxury double decker bus. The bus, which has all mod cons including ten beds for the band and crew members, as well as video games, TVs and DVD players, was parked on a narrow cobbled street outside the Radio Forth studio in Edinburgh when a pair of attendants seized the opportunity to ticket their bus.

The drivers were beside the bus making sure the band got safely into the building when the Enforcers pounced to hand them a £30 fine. Trevor Payne, who has been the band’s driver for four and a half years, said: "We were standing around the side of the bus with the boys when they stuck the ticket on. It was unbelievable. They walked all the way up the street just to give us a ticket. This is the first ticket I have got in four and a half years but where was I meant to park the bus?"

The band, on a whistle-stop tour of Scotland, were in Edinburgh to meet their number one fan - who postponed her wedding so she could go to their concert. Jilly Finlayson, 24, is so infatuated with the Irish boy band that she ordered her husband-to-be to change the wedding date when it clashed with one of their concerts. She was yesterday voted number one fan by Radio Forth which ran a competition to find the most obsessed fan to win a meeting with the band.

Jilly, who works for SportScotland, postponed her "dream day" for three months so she could go to the gig at the SECC in Glasgow last May. She has already booked her ticket for the return leg next year. She is now happily married to 23-year-old Alex, despite her obsession, and they live with their 21-month-old daughter Charlotte in Penicuik, Midlothian. She said: "I just told my fiancé that the date would have to be changed. There was no arguing, I started as I mean to go on. Some people may think it is a bit excessive but it was the only concert date I could get a ticket for and I really wanted to go. I was so stunned that I won, it was a dream come true for me to meet them and when I go to their next concert I will be one of the privileged few that have done so. But Alex puts up with me very well and he understands that there will always be another five men in my life."

A spokeswoman for Edinburgh City Council’s transport department said: "Parking attendants are not allowed to exercise discretion and every vehicle is treated the same irrespective of the owner. On this occasion the attendant did ask the driver of the vehicle, which was taking up three parking bays, to move and was told he would do so and a ticket was then issued We welcome many celebrities to our city, but when it comes to parking, the rules are the same for everyone and there are no exemptions. "

Westlife will have to stump up £60 but if they pay within 14 days the fine is reduced to £30.

Westlife to make fans' dreams come true

Westlife have promised to make a dream come true for a group of young Belfast fans. With the help of the Belfast Telegraph, the boys are to meet the teenagers who have been camping outside the city's Odyssey Arena all week to snap up the first tickets for the band's concerts next June.

The teenage girls - who all hail from Belfast - set up camp outside the Box Office on Monday to ensure their seats in the front row at the Odyssey when Westlife return next year.

Nicky, Shane, Mark, Bryan and Kian will play the Odyssey on June 17 and 18 as part of their Unbreakable tour. Tickets for the gigs go on sale this Saturday.

One of the girls, 18-year-old Michelle McKee, said a group of friends were taking it in turns to stay overnight at the front of the queue. She said: "We don't care how long we have to wait. We want to make sure we get the best tickets in the house."

After reading the story in the Belfast Telegraph this week Westlife's Shane Filan contacted us to say the band would love to meet the girls.

Speaking en route to Manchester, where the boys are promoting their new single Unbreakable, Shane said: "It's totally mad to think that these girls are camping outside for almost a week to get tickets to see us. We know our fans in Belfast are pretty mad, but this is just brilliant. We would love to meet the girls when we're back playing at the Odyssey. Whatever night they have tickets for, we'll be only too happy to meet them for a chat. We know it's still nine months away but we promise we'll keep our word."

Shane said the band felt it was a priority to give something back to their fans. He said, "That's why we're here. It's our fans who have put us where we are and we want to do something special for them. We're not just saying this, but our fans in Northern Ireland are our best. We always get such a special reception when we come to Belfast and we're always so well looked after. We're playing two dates next year [at the Odyssey] at the moment but we would love to break our record of 12. If our shows sell out, we'll just keep adding more."

Westlife and Bullies

Bryan and Mark have shared their pained stories of being bullied as teenagers, in response to the Daily Record's Save Our Kids campaign. Yesterday, Bryan and Mark made an emotional appeal to Scots everywhere to recognize the pressures kids face at school.

Mark and Bryan say their own school years were made a living hell by bullies. While Bryan eventually developed a sense of humour to deal with relentless taunts about his weight, Mark's bullying got so bad he was afraid to walk from class to class for fear of being beaten up.

Overcome with emotion at the Record's Save Our Kids coverage, Bryan said: "I was bullied throughout my schooldays for being overweight, but in some ways it helped me. It hurt me a lot, especially as a youngster, but eventually I just got so used to being knocked. Because I got bullied so much, I actually worked on my confidence and somehow managed to build up my self-esteem. Rightly or wrongly, I learned to accept the bullying and it made me a better person in the long run. Even though it hurt, it was important for me to learn from it. I thought if I could try to get some control over the bullying, I could perhaps get through it. I don't know how I coped. I just think I got so used to being bullied that I let it go. It almost became a part of my life. When people called me fat it would just bounce off me. It made me witty because I got so used to firing quick, one-line answers back at people."

Mark added: "I was very quiet in school and that attracted the bullies. They tend to pick on people who are different in any way but it is much more interesting than being the same as anyone else. I used to feel too embarrassed to tell anyone about what was being done. I feel now that I shouldn't have been afraid to speak up because there is nothing to be embarrassed about if you are being bullied. I know a lot of kids look at teachers as if they are aliens but they will listen and understand. Often they can do something about it. Nine in 10 people at school are very nice and genuine. Just that one in 10 is a bad apple or a bully. Don't let them ruin your school years."

The band joined in to praise the Record's campaign.

Nicky said: "Anything which helps people talk about the problem is a good thing. People can find a release from their anger and hurt. It's also important for these bullies to be made to realise that it's not acceptable behaviour."

Mark added: "People take drastic measures because they are too alone to deal with the pressure. I knew a friend who committed suicide because his sister's boyfriend killed himself. They were close and he couldn't deal with it For me, it was bullying which proved hard to handle. It got to the point where I was afraid to go from class to class because there were people after me. It's not very nice to be a victim of that sort of thing. The minute I told my parents, all the emotion flowed out of me. I was crying but I didn't feel half as bad afterwards. It was such a great relief, in a way, I almost felt a bit daft. Talking about the problem seemed to take away the intensity of the pain. Unfortunately, people lose all their confidence and start believing what bullies say. It is really sad that a lot of people are hurt by bullies who think they are having a laugh These people should be told to stop but they should also be given help, to make them realise it's no way to behave and get to the heart of their problems."

Nicky added: "I'm sure the people who bullied kids who have committed suicide will find their lives ruined as well. People need to be educated when they are young about the consequences of bullying."

Bryan continued: "I read these stories in the Record of young people who have taken their lives and it's heartbreaking. A little girl shouldn't even have the capacity to think of doing something like that. I'd like young people to realise there is always a better option There's always someone you can talk to, or a number you can call to get advice or help or just for someone to listen."

Shane insists that children who are bullied should still be positive about the future. He said: "Bryan and Mark have been bullied and look at them now. Just because you are being bullied in your early years doesn't mean that it is going to be that way for the rest of your life Be strong and tell somebody. If you can't talk to friends or a parent, call Samaritans or Childline."

Bryan added: "It's true. It may seem odd to say it but if I hadn't been bullied at school and hadn't been overweight, I probably wouldn't be here today."

Westlife lands £20 million record deal

According to The Sun, BMG signed the boys to a 5 album deal worth £20million (roughly $30 million).

Shane is quoted as saying, “We’re not going away — we’ve hardly started yet. We’ve literally just signed after negotiating for six months. There’s plenty to celebrate but we’re not going to go mad. I’ll save some money for a rainy day, when I’m really old, like 35 or something! We’ve worked really hard for the past few years and hardly ever seen our families.”

Westlife in Club Prank

Nicky and Bryan groveled to bouncers recently - when they were escorted out of Liverpool, England nightclub. The boys were partying in popular nightspot, Living Room, when the heavymen approached them to give them their marching orders after an apparent complaint about the pair's behavior was made.

Crushed by the prospect of an early night the boys begged security not to eject them and pleaded innocent to any bad behaviour. However, they dissolved into fits of giggles when they discovered that the whole incident was a wacky joke by prankster mate DJ Joe Ferguson.

Westlife amused by American security

It's more like, what would you expect? Westlife were apparently surprised by US security precautions on their most recent trip to America. Despite being relatively unknown in US, the boys were provided with an entourage of minders which dwarfed their own party. Mark said, "The Americans are so security conscious. As soon as we arrived in the country, we were assigned ten huge bodyguards to look after us. It was ridiculous. I mean, we were only just starting out over there. At one point Bryan ran out the back of our van to escape them."

Westlife Join The Rat Pack...

Westlife's Bryan McFadden and his stunning wife Kerry Katona have been confirmed as star guests on this Saturday's (actually a few Saturday's ago) Rat Pack Ball in the Four Seasons Hotel in Dublin. The couple will join guests such as Michael Flatley and Sinead O'Connor on the night to witness the first performance of the new celebrity Rat Pack.

The event, which is aid of cancer research, is a black tie ball with tables selling out at 2,000 euro each. Over 400 guests will be in attendance as the new Rat Pack take to the stage with their 18 piece big band.

Westlife back anti-bigotry bid

Pop stars Westlife today backed a campaign to end bigotry in Scottish football. The Irish chart toppers said Old Firm club Celtic were right to demand its fans stop sectarian chants.

Supporters were sent a letter from the Glasgow side urging them not to sing IRA slogans during matches after some fans disrupted a minute`s silence for September 11 victims last week before a match at Motherwell.

Speaking at west of Scotland`s Radio Clyde, Shane said: ``I suppose you shouldn`t sing political songs in a football match. It doesn`t really make sense. But the thing about football is there`s so many songs they sing all over the world that I think it`s going to be hard to drum it into everybody`s heads. Maybe if you bring very young kids to games and not sing racial songs or anything that`s the best way forward.``

Celtic midfielder Neil Lennon was also the victim of sectarianism last month when he was forced to withdraw from the Northern Ireland side after a death threat. Ian McLeod, chief executive of the club, wrote to fans actions came after discussions with the supporters` associations and the Celtic Trust, saying that the club should be open to all.

He wrote: ``We are a Scottish club - proud of our Irish roots - but our words need to be backed up by the actions we take, particularly in relation to politics. It is therefore a concern that a limited but vocal number within our support seek to use the gathering of Celtic supporters as a way of demonstrating their own separate support for organisations at the extreme of the political spectrum - most notably the IRA. We are a football club first and foremost and clearly it is not our position to dictate to anyone what political beliefs or actions should or should not be."

The songwriter for "Unbreakable" (Westlife's next release) and "A Moment Like This" (American Pop Idol - Currently #1 in the US)

Jon Reid was asked by judge Simon Cowell to write the money-spinning track for Clarkson. His song, A Moment Like This, has since climbed to No.1 in America's Billboard Hot 100, outselling hits by Eminem and P. Diddy.

Last night, the former sheet metal worker was still trying to take in the news of his success. Jon said: "It just hasn't sunk in. It's unbelievable. It must have been a long time since someone from Scotland has had a No1 in the States. The song is all over the radio there. My manager called me last night and said, `Jon, go anywhere in London tonight. There's only one guy at No.1 in America and that's you'. I phoned my family to tell them the news but I am completely exhausted by it."

Jon, of East Kilbride, scooped the deal to write for the American Idol winner despite efforts by top US songsmiths to cash in.

He said: "Simon had asked me to work with Swedish songwriter Jorgen Eloffson because he needed songs for American Idol and a first US single for Westlife. I went to Sweden three months ago to meet Jorgen and we hit it off. The first song we wrote, Unbreakable, is to be the next Westlife single and the second song was A Moment Like This for Kelly. They've ended up being two of the biggest songs of my career. I am now hoping Westlife get to No1 in the States to make it a double. And there's every chance it will be No.1 in Britain.'

Jon and Jorgen clinched the deal to write the songs after being invited to dinner at Cowell's swanky house in Beverly Hills. Simon then took them to the American Idol show to give them an idea of the magnitude of a show that attracts 100 million votes.

Jon said: "It's the biggest- rated show in the US and he wanted us to see it. The night we were there, it was down to the final four and we got to meet all of them as we were going to work with them. I saw the video of the final and Kelly sang our song after she realised she had won. But she could hardly sing it because she was so emotional and the lyrics summed up how she felt. Now Simon has asked us to write songs for Will Young and Gareth Gates.

Westlife - US Chart watch

We continue to monitor WOOO on the US charts. The song has not cracked the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. However, it continues to rise on the airplay charts. The song moved from #45 to #41 with 899 airplays.

US airwaves have not been kind to pop songs this year. The #1 songs for this year have all been R&B. Nelly has been at the top of the charts the past 12 weeks. The winner of American Idol, Kelly Clarkson, will probably be the first #1 pop song in the US for 2002 with "A Moment Like This". She is currently #42 in radio airplay and #6x in the Billboard Hot 100. That song is released on Tuesday.

Speaking of Kelly Clarkson...

Westlife are working with the same songwriters as Kelly Clarkson in their bid to crack the US. Their new track, Unbreakable, out on October 28, was written by Jorgen Elofsson and Jon Reid (who wrote "A Moment Like This"). The video for Unbreakable was shot in Los Angeles, California. The song will be on the greatest hits CD slated for release on November 11.

And it's a competitive release schedule!

Westlife will have some competition for that #1 spot on October 28. Also slated for new release on that same week:

Kylie Minogue - Come In To My World
Dannii Minogue - Put the Needle On It

Blue - One Love

Odds are that Westlife and Blue will dominate #1 and 2...with the big question being who takes that #1 spot.

While we're still on charts

Non Westlife related here, but I pointed this out last week...and it's gotten even more attention this week. UK Pop Idols losers, Liberty X, continue to improve on their US radio airplay. Their single, Just A Little, is apparently the fourth most requested new song. The Billboard review of the single, a UK No1 in May, reads: “It’s a funky, R&B- peppered anthem whose chain gang chorus penetrates the brainwaves like a microwave on high. Just A Little has a lot of potential.”

Bryan with a Book

Bryan was spotted in north London this past week, days after he returned from Los Angeles. He was seen buying soccer star Roy Keane's autobiography. That book deals with his decision to quit the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup squad in the summer.

Shane Gets Serious and a Ferrari!!

There may not be a wedding yet for Shane Filen, the lead singer with Ireland's Westlife. But, he is getting ready to make some serious moves on his long term girlfriend Gillian Walsh.

Speaking to ShowBizIreland.com recently at the Kerrygold Dublin show, Shane explained that marriage may still be a bit away for him but moving in together is just around the corner.

"Myself and Gillian have no plans to marry just yet. But, I have just built a new house for my parents and I guess one for the two of us will be next on my list. It may have to wait for a while as I've just spent loads of money a new car along with Nicky and Bryan from the band. We all got new Ferraris. They picked up theirs last month but I just picked up my new black Ferrari 575 Marenello."

He went on, "Gillian and myself only flew in from Mexico, where we were on holiday for the past two weeks. We came back so I could watch my brother Liam. He is competing today in the jumps for the Horseshow. We have loads of horses down home in Sligo and my family are big into jumping so it had been a family tradition of ours for years to come to the horseshow."

Abs admits he cost Westlife $30,000

Abs, formerly of Five, admits he cost Westlife $30,000 after trashing their hotel room from the outside. On the tour he decided to try and make it impossible for them to find their rooms in a posh hostelry. He says, "I unscrewed the numbers from the lads' hotel room doors. A week later, the hotel called Westlife's management with a bill $30,000. Apparently they were solid gold."

Ash's Tim Wheeler says Westlife are embarrassment for Irish music

Ash lead singer Tim Wheeler says Westlife are an "embarrassment" to Irish music. He's told October's Q magazine he couldn't believe seeing a large billboard at Dublin Airport welcoming people to the home of Westlife.

He said they had a go at Westlife by burning 100 copies of their CD. He said, "I always make a big point of spitting at the billboard whenever we walk past. They said we couldn't sell 250 records and then we came out with a platinum album, Free All Angels, that went to number 1."

Asked how he would feel if Westlife burnt copies of Ash's new album, Tim said, "We'd appreciate the sales, especially if they were to do it in the first week of release."
