Westlife scores a double!

#1 UK album - Westlife's 5th #1 album.
#1 UK single - 2nd week in a row!

When was the last time I could write that headline? Topping both UK charts...plus having their single actually stay at #1 for TWO weeks, instead of the usual one. I think it bodes very well for Westlife's longevity as a group. They were able to sell 70,000 albums on the very first day of sales alone.

The rest of the charts....
Arctic Monkeys hang in at number two with 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'. Pharrell Williams' 'Can I Have It Like That' featuring Gwen Stefani is the highest new entry at three, while Craig David's 'Don't Love You No More' enters at four.
Goldfrapp's 'Number 1' is new at number nine, however The Rakes can only manage 39 for the re-issue of '22 Grand Job'.

Westlife 5th biggest selling artists in the UK so far this century

Singer Robbie Williams has sold the most albums in the UK so far this century - notching up sales of 6.3million. Seven of Williams' eight albums have topped the chart

Coldplay are at number two, with sales of 6.2m albums, while Dido is in third place, with 5.7m albums. The figures are based on albums sold in the UK from 1 January 2000 to 11 October 2005, but exclude greatest hits, live albums and downloads.

They were compiled by the Official UK Charts Company for C4 show The Biggest Selling Artists of the 21st Century. Eminem and Westlife are fourth and fifth respectively, while the Top 10 is completed by Norah Jones, Blue, Anastacia, the Stereophonics and Oasis.

Kylie Minogue, Will Young and Craig David are just outside the Top 10.

Westlife to South Africa

Westlife say they're looking forward to visiting South Africa. The group, who recently released a new album, Face to Face, will soon visit South Africa for the second time this year.

Nicky Byrne, one of the four Westlife singers, said from Germany that they love meeting their fans. "When we performed in South Africa in March for the first time in six years, we thought: 'Why did we wait so long to come here? Let's come back as soon as possible!'"

Westlife are currently on a promotional tour for their new album. Byrne said they're very excited about their latest offering. "The CD was made over a two-year period and has a lot of new songs on. There is something for everybody."

They plan to visit a number of countries before Christmas. "We are in Stuttgart at the moment and, apart from South Africa, we are also visiting Scandinavia, the Netherlands and England."

They see travelling all over the globe as part of their work. "We still have a lot of fun, particularly when an album is well received. It is very important for us to enjoy what we do."

While the singers are in South Africa, they will take the stage with diva Diana Ross at her concert on November 11 at the Bellville Velodrome.

The group also recorded one of the tracks on the album with Ross. "We will sing When you tell me that you love me with her. We also plan to make a music video for the song in South Africa."

It will be the second music video that the band shoots in South Africa. The video of the hit single, When you're looking like that, was also made locally. The concert in which they are appearing with Ross is in aid of several charity organisations such as the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund and Unite Against Hunger.

"It is always wonderful to be part of a project with a good purpose," Byrne said. "We want to thank our fans in South Africa and we are looking forward to tanning under the warm sun!"

2nd South Africa article

Westlife will perform at various functions in South Africa in November.

Their first gig will be at the Unite Against Hunger special charity banquet on November 9 in Johannesburg. Two days later the band will perform with Motown diva Diana Ross at the Bellville Velodrome in Cape Town.

On November 13 Westlife will hold a concert with South African Idols contestants at the Altech Grand Prix at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, north of Johannesburg. The band then head to Bloemfontein for a concert at the Callie Human Hall, University of the Free State, on November 21 in support of the Unite Against Hunger charity.

It will be Westlife's first time in the city. The band, who recently scored a number one spot on the British charts with their new single You Raise Me Up, went on a five concert sell-out tour of South Africa in February.

Songwriter for "You Raise Me Up"

Westlife are back on track after a long stint out of the limelight. Today the group’s album will debut at the top of the UK charts, thanks to their new hit single.

But while You Raise Me Up may have given Westlife its 13th No 1, the real winner is the Irish novelist and songwriter who wrote it. Brendan Graham, 60, from Tipperary, has seen more than 100 artists record the track since he penned it in 2001, notching up an estimated 15m sales and earning him about €1m in royalties. Now Westlife, who sold about 200,000 albums last week alone, will add considerably to Graham’s retirement fund.

“I’m trying to work out what I did,” he said. “This is the pension song, as they say. At this game you don’t get a pension, so one needs the odd song like this. It’s fantastic.”

Louis Walsh, Westlife’s manager, was generous in Graham’s praise. “It’s all about the song — that’s actually selling the album,” he said. “It’s got something that just captures people. It’s going to sell millions and their album will sell millions worldwide too.”

The band members are modest about their input. “Without a doubt 80 to 90% of it is down to the song,” said Kian Egan. “We are back with a big bang. If we had come back with a plain pop song, I don’t think we would have got anything like this reaction.”

Westlife are the 103rd artists to record the anthemic ballad. As well as versions by artists in Ireland, Britain and America, the song has been recorded in Spanish, Italian, Portugese, Swedish and Norwegian and there are several Asian translations.

“The variety is quite interesting. It has been picked up by classical artists, pop and everything in between, including country and gospel,” said Rolf Lovland, a Norwegian composer who co-wrote the song with Graham and splits the royalties. “The last one was a disco version.”

Lovland originally wrote the music for You Raise Me Up for Secret Garden, his own musical act with Fionnuala Sherry, an Irish violinist. They won Eurovision in 1995 with an instrumental track, Nocturne.

Lovland asked Graham to write the lyrics for the melody after reading the writer’s first novel, The Whitest Flower, set during the great famine. “Brendan wrote some very powerful words to it — it was a piece of genius work he did,” said Lovland. Brian Kennedy sang on the Secret Garden version, a No 1 hit in Norway.

It was this record that David Foster, an American record producer, heard and decided to give to his protegé, a 22-year-old pop opera singer called Josh Groban. Groban’s version topped the Billboard adult contemporary chart for seven weeks, and was nominated for a Grammy. It was released as a single from his album Closer, which sold 6m copies.

Foster, in an RTE documentary last year, described the track, which has echoes of traditional Irish airs such as Danny Boy, as “darn near a perfect song”.

Selah, a US band, had a No 1 in the Christian charts with their version last year. The track has been adopted by religious congregations of all denominations across America for use in services.

It is being used in trauma and cancer recovery programmes and in anti-bullying courses. It is one of the most used songs at weddings, but is also one of the most sung at funerals.

“People see the song in different ways; some as a love song, others as a spiritual one,” said Graham. “In America it has taken on the mantle of a patriotic song.” Both American presidential candidates wanted to use it in their election campaigns but Graham has a clause in his contract that says his work can’t be used in politics.

Graham became a full-time songwriter after losing his job in the clothing industry in 1993. The following year his song Rock’n’roll Kids, sung by Charlie McGettigan and Paul Harrington, won the Eurovision. In 1996, Eimear Quinn won the song contest with Graham’s composition The Voice.

That year he began writing novels after landing a publishing deal with HarperCollins. The third book in his trilogy will be released this week and features Graham’s most famous song in a central scene, in which a confederate soldier sings it to a young Irish nun.

Among those who have recorded the song are Daniel O’Donnell, and Tommy Fleming, who is two places behind Westlife in the Irish album chart with Voice of Hope, which also contains the track.

Westlife's post hit party

Pop sensations Westlife celebrated the success of their new single and album this weekend by hosting a hush-hush party in Belfast on Friday night.

The boyband, who were signing copies of their album Face To Face in HMV, Grafton Street in Dublin earlier that day, hid from the paparazzi by travelling 200 miles just for a drink.

But news travelled fast and by the time Nicky Byrne and his wife Georgina were leaving the Soap VIP rooms in the city's trendy Potthouse nightclub they were snapped.

According to a source inside the club, Nicky, Shane Filan, Mark Feehily and Kian Egan were all celebrating by drinking shots. She said: "The boys found out they were going to number one with their single You Raise Me Up when they came in and were really lovely to all the staff.

"They wanted to drink something fun and exciting so one of our barmen made them his special shots called Strawberries & Cream."

Westlife chose the Potthouse, owned by businessman Mark Beirne, after Kian spent a good night's drinking in it a few weeks ago and, according to a band insider, they will definitely be back.

Speaking yesterday, he added: "The great thing about the Potthouse is that it's not jam-packed and the lads can have a few drinks in peace without trouble. They really liked it and said they'll definitely be back. The night was a bit of an unofficial celebration party, pre-sales of the album were great and the mid-weeks placed the single really well so the guys are really happy."

If Westlife's new single charts at number one today in the UK charts it will be the band's 13th number one. But Kian says it's not enough and he's aiming for the 20 mark. He said: "I think our big dream now is to reach 20 number ones, we've seven albums behind us and we're really proud of that. Right now we're all really excited about the new album. Westlife will definitely still be here in five years' time."

Shane agrees, saying he wants to last long enough to let his new-born daughter Nicole see her daddy perform. He added: "I'd like Westlife to last now more than ever so that Nicole can see what her dad does. I hope when she's old enough she can come to concerts and see me perform."
